Traveling from India to Bhutan

Historically, India and Bhutan have had close cultural and political ties. Because of this, Indian nationals can visit Bhutan without any hassles. There are multiple ways of travelling to Bhutan from India.

Flying to Bhutan from India – The Bhutanese national carrier, Druk Air operates regular flights from Delhi, Kolkata and Bagdogra in India to Paro International Airport in Bhutan.

By road – One can drive to Phuentsholing, which is the border town of Bhutan from Jaigaon in west Bengal.

Jaigaon is 4 hours drive from the Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal. Bagdogra is well connected with the rest of India through different airlines.

Also one can reach the New Jalpaiguri railway station, which is well connected on the Indian railways network, and hire a vehicle to reach Jaigaon/Phuentsholing. The drive time from New Jalpaiguri is about 4 hours.

Visa formalities

Indian nationals do not need a visa for going to Bhutan. However, route permits and entry permits are needed which the GoMissing team will process.

Indian nationals do need either a passport or a voter ID card to enter Bhutan. No other identity document is accepted.

Bhutanese Currency

Bhutanese currency is called Ngultrum (Nu) and is at par with the Indian currency. Indian currency is a legal tender in Bhutan. However, 500 and 1000 rupee notes are not accepted.

ATMs are few and far between, so make sure that you have enough cash with you for your trip.
