Bhutan MTB Expedition Itinerary

Arrive Paro International Airport-a high altitude airport at 7500 ft.

Flying to Bhutan is an unmatched experience. You see majestic sights of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and other Himalayan peaks including Bhutan’s sacred Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drake.

From the airport, you are escorted by GoMissing representative to your Hotel. After lunch we go on an acclimatization ride to see the Drugyal Dzong where the attacks on Bhutan from the East were repelled.

Overnight at Paro.

Today is an exciting day as we will head to the most pictured Tiger’s Nest Monastery!

The monastery is perched on a rocky ledge with a sheer drop of nearly 3000ft. It is said that in the second half of the 8th century, Guru Padma Sambbaava alighted here upon the back of a flying tigress.

We will have a picnic lunch at Taktsang cafeteria. The round trip hike takes about 3 hours.

We return to Paro and enjoy one of Bhutan’s most unique ancestral inventions, the hot stone bath at a farmhouse – a pastoral property where you will participate in building the fire that heats the rocks to a glowing red lava-like temperature.

The stones are then placed in a wood lined tub dug into the rocky streambed. Don your bathing suit for this Himalayan Jacuzzi-an experience you will only find in pages of a luxe magazine!

Overnight in Paro

Today we head to Haa Valley crossing Chelela Pass. Haa Valley borders Tibet and was closed to tourists until recently. The route passes dense lush green forests which will leave you speechless! In the April departure, you’ll get to see incredibly beautiful Rhododendron forests in bloom, while in the October departure; you’ll see the gorgeous Autumn colors of the Himalayas.

The climb up to Chele la pass is tough as it will have an elevation gain of around 2200 meters over a distance of 36 kms. From the pass, you will glide down all the way to the Haa valley where we will load up all the bikes in the support jeep and drive to our resort, deep in the Haa valley.

Overnight at Hotel.

Today sounds like an extremely tough ride with massive elevation gains, however, the numbers do not paint the correct picture of this ride. The ride starts with a gorgeous downhill starting from the hotel to Haa town and then the route goes up and down all the way to the confluence. The final 12 kms to the confluence is a downhill and after the confluence, the ride to Thimpu is a mild uphill. However, we will complete the ride at the 100 kms mark and drive to our resort in Thimpu.
This ride is arguably the most beautiful ride of the expedition as it runs along the Haa river and through a lush green forest area. Quaint villages, monasteries, spectacular vistas and wonderful people greet you all along this ride.

Overnight at Hotel in Thimpu.

The ride starts with a long downhill of around 12 kms from the hotel to Semtokha. From Semtokha, the climb to Dochu La pass strats. The climb is not tough and is once again beautiful as you cross dense Himalayan forests. The road to Dochu la is currently under construction and there will be some rough patches en route. At the pass, you’ll get splendid views of the Himalayan ranges and there will be plenty of photography opportunities at the pass.

From the pass, the route is a long downhill all the way to Punakha valley with some short climbing right at the end to the resort.

Overnight at a hotel in Punakha

You’ll start the day with a drive to the Dochu La pass and from the pass cycle to Paro. The ride from Dochu la pass to the outskirts of Thimpu is all downhill and from there till the confluence of Paro River and Thimpu River is a predominant downhill. From the confluence, it is a gorgeous up and down ride to Paro town. At Paro, you will check in to the resort where you will bask in the glory of completing a spectacular MTB expedition.

Overnight at Paro

After an early breakfast, you will be dropped to the airport for your flight back home.
