What is the Ladakh Mountain Biking Expedition all about?

GoMissing takes you on a mad & extremely challenging mountain biking tour of Ladakh. The tour involves 14 days of cycling over high mountain passes, across rugged cold desert terrains, along rivers and the spectacularly beautiful Pangong Tso Lake. Along the way you’ll get gorgeous views of the snow capped Himalayan peaks and you’ll ride through the most picturesque Himalayan landscape.
The arduous cycling trip is more than compensated by the stunning landscapes you will cycle through. The journey through the desolate and remote countryside involves climbing major passes up to a height of 5,600 m (18,414 feet), so both you and your bike must be in great condition.

Trip itinerary

You’ll take it easy today to get used to the altitude and cold climes of this beautiful mountain town. Spend your day on the hammock enjoying the cool breeze and the blue skies.

Meals included: Breakfast and Dinner.

You will step out of the hotel today and give your body a mild work out. You will start the day with a short ride to Shanti Stupa from where you will get a bird’s eye view of Leh town. You will ride along further and take a slightly longer route which goes around Leh town and hit the Leh Khardung-la highway. From there, you will cycle back to town for lunch.

Post lunch, you will ride back to the hotel and take it easy for the rest of the day.

Meals included: Breakfast and Dinner

Post breakfast, you’ll head out for a beautiful ride to Thikshey Monastery. The ride is all tarmac and as you get out of Leh town, traffic becomes thinner and the ride becomes more and more fun. You’ll get your first views of the marvellous cold desert terrain of Ladakh. Needless to say, you’ll take the longer route to get to Thikshey and not the straight road to the monastery. After visiting the monastery, you will cycle a couple of kilometers further to Thikshey village where you will have lunch.

On your way back from Thikshey, you will stop over at Shey monastery and take a small break at the holy fish pond where you can feed the holy fish.

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner

Your real expedition starts today. The ride from Leh to Alchi is goegeous and goes through the moonscape of Ladakh. The 65 kms ride has an elevation gain of over 900 meters and the road is fully tarmac. You’re going to have an absolutely amazing time during the ride today. While riding, you’ll encounter long and fast downhill stretches and you’ll encounter soul destroying mild uphills which never seem to finish. Just pray there isn’t any headwind today!!

En route, you’ll get to see the confluence of Indus and Zanskar Rivers, cross the Magnetic hill and see Gurudwara Pathar Sahib. You’ll stop only at 1 or 2 places while going to Alchi. On the way back, you’ll cover the places left out.

After reaching Alchi, you will have time to visit the Alchi monastery.

Meals included: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner

Post breakfast, you will ride back to Leh. The uphills and downhills will reverse and during today’s ride, you’ll have an elevation gain of over 1300 meters. Even so, the ride is spectacular and you’ll enjoy every minute of it. Rather, you’ll enjoy most of it – except the soul destroying uphills!!

If you want a break today, then that’s exactly what you’ll do. If you’re up for another short rideof 30 kms, then you’ll go to Saboo model village where you’ll get a chance to ride through the lush fields of Saboo village. A bonus during this ride is the spectacular view of the Stok range.

As you get back from Saboo, you’ll stop over in town for lunch and then ride back to the hotel. Rest of the day you can chill at the hotel or head out for a walk/ ride to town.

Meals included: Breakfast and Dinner

Today is an easy ride day. You’ll start from Leh city and ride towards Pangong Tso lake. Your first night halt during the Leh – Pangong Tso section is at Sakti village where you will stay at a lovely homestay owned by Subedar Gyalpo who has served in the Indian Army for decades.

You will arrive at Sakti by lunch time and join the family for a simple home cooked meal. In the afternoon, you’re free to relax or walk around in the village.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Be prepared for a ride worse than soul destroying!! You’re going to crawl up the mighty Changla which at 5,360 meters is no walk/ ride in the park. Expect to crawl up at an average speed of 5Kmph, which means that the ride uphill will take about 6 hours (possibly more).

After the pass, there is a bone jarring downhill on probably one of the worst stretches on this road – rather the worst stretch anywhere in the world! Once this terrible stretch is over, you’ll ride on a spectacularly beautiful road – the road quality is average+ but the scenery is straight out of a fairy tale. Additionally, this road is now all downhill till Tangste village where you will stay for the night.

Meals included: Breakfast, Packed lunch and Dinner

Now that the worst of climbing is over, you’ll ride on another spectacularly beautiful section to the Pangong Tso lake. The last section of today’s ride is uphill but it’s so beautiful that you’ll thank yourself (and us) for the rest of your life!

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We’ll keep it easy today (hah! Do we ever?) Okay so on a serious note, we will keep it easy today. You will drive back from Pangong Tso to Durbuk from where a split from the main road leads to Nubra valley. From Durbuk, you will ride to Shyok village which is around 15-17 kms away. The ride runs along the Shyok river and is probably one of the most beautiful rides anywhere in the world.

You’ll get to take a good break today from all the riding.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Be prepared for the longest ride of the expedition. Though this is the longest ride of this expedition, it isn’t as difficult. The climbs are mild (strictly comparitively speaking) and the scenery is mind blowingly beautiful. You’ll do long flat stretches during this ride and the scenery will be overwhelming to the senses.

Meals included: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner

You will start early after a hearty breakfast and ride to Khardung village. At the Khardung village, you’ll get to expereince Ladakhi culture and food and especially the locally brewed Chaang. The ride is all uphill, but the road is good tarmac – even so, be prepared for the climbs!

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is the final day of the expedition and the biggest climb – the mighty Khardung-la pass. The views are simply astounding and once you reach the pass, you’ll look back and say WOW, I’ve done it. From Khardung-la to your hotel in Leh is a spectacular 40 km downhill, which you’ve completely earned by now.

Meals included: Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner

Expedition ends this morning.

It’s time to bid adeiu to Ladakh – or stay on if you plan to explore more of Ladakh.
