An Adventurous Trek – Where two contrasting worlds meet
There is a lush green world of Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh, dotted with shepherds, flush with rain showers and vibrant plants. The trek takes you from this Kinnauri valley to Pin Bhaba, a high altitude mountain pass (approximately 4,850 meters), that connects Bhaba valley in Kinnaur district of Himachal to Pin Valley in Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.
The trek offers one of the most spectacular sights in the world. As you reach the pass, you leave the lush slopes and enter the stark and desolate terrain of Spiti. Two strikingly different terrains, one synonymous with abundance and greenery, the other with barrenness. Together they make for a beautiful contrast and are absolutely worth experiencing.
This playground of gods will make you feel like an explorer and a shepherd, all at the same time.
At a glance
The trip starts from Chandigarh. The group starts at around 11:00AM for Narkanda (180Kms, 6 hours). We stay overnight overnight at Narkanda
After an early breakfast, the group leaves for Kafnu, a small village in Bhaba valley from where the trek starts. We trek for an hour or two to get acclimatized and camp ahead of Kafnu.
The real trek begins today. We will be trekking for at least 5/6 hours. We will cross the dense Mustarang forest full of Pine, Cedar and Birch trees. The initial part of the trek consists of a steep incline and then a gradual descent to the Mulling campsite.
Today we head for Pistarang (4,000 meters), the base camp for crossing the mighty Bhaba pass. The path runs along the Bhabha River; at places we will have to cross the river. The climb is steep and is laden with beautiful wild flowers, particularly around the Kara pastures. We camp overnight at Pistarang.
We have reached the penultimate point of our journey! The path rises steeply to the Bhaba pass (4,850 meters), the point where you leave behind the lush green slopes of Kinnaur to enter into a cold desert. From here on, the trek is mostly downhill and relatively easy. You start descending into Pin valley which is known as the land of ibex, and snow leopard – the most elusive and the most beautiful big cat. If you’re extremely lucky, you might get a glimpse of this grey ghost of the Himalayas. We camp overnight at Baldar.
We hike through the beautiful desert terrain to reach the first village in Spiti – Mudh. It’s a small village with less than 200 inhabitants. The trek ends at Mudh. After a small halt in the village, we drive three hours to Kaza, where we stay overnight.
Today you will cross the Kunzum pass which connects Spiti with Lahaul valley and the Rohtang pass which connects Lahaul valley with Manali. The drive is simply surreal. We stay overnight at Manali.
Our vehicle will drop you from Manali to Chandigarh. Trip ends at Chandigarh.
