What is the Pangong Tso Ride all about?

GoMissing takes you on a mad & challenging mountain biking tour of Ladakh. The tour involves crossing 1 insane pass – the Chele La en route to Pangong Tso which is quite enough for even the best of riders. During the ride, you will cover 1 high mountain pass, ride through rugged cold desert terrains, along incredible meadows where you’ll get to see Marmots, mind blowing landscapes and ride along the spectacularly beautiful Pangong Tso Lake.
The (not so!) arduous cycling trip is more than compensated by the stunning landscapes you will cycle through. The journey through the desolate and remote countryside involves climbing the Chang La pass at 5,300 meters, so both you and your bike must be in great condition.

Ladakh MTB Expedition – Pangong Tso Ride itinerary

You’ll take it easy today to get used to the altitude and cold climes of this beautiful mountain town. Spend your day on the hammock enjoying the cool breeze and the blue skies.

Meals included: Breakfast and Dinner.

You will step out of the hotel today and give your body a mild work out. You will start the day with a short ride to Shanti Stupa from where you will get a bird’s eye view of Leh town. You will ride along further and take a slightly longer route which goes around Leh town and hit the Leh Khardung-la highway. From there, you will cycle back to town for lunch.

Post lunch, you will ride back to the hotel and take it easy for the rest of the day.

Meals included: Breakfast and Dinner

Your first big ride of the trip is today. You’ll cover around 50 km during the day as you ride from Leh to Gurudwara Pathar Sahib and back to Leh. During the ride, you’ll cross the magnetic hill, confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers and the beautiful moonscape of Ladakh. At the Gurudwara, you’ll enjoy piping hot tea and langar before cycling back to Leh. The ride today is all tarmac.

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner

Today is an easy ride day. You’ll start from Leh city and ride towards Pangong Tso lake. Your first night halt during the Leh – Pangong Tso section is at Sakti village where you will stay at a lovely homestay owned by Subedar Gyalpo who has served in the Indian Army for decades.

You will arrive at Sakti by lunch time and join the family for a simple home cooked meal. In the afternoon, you’re free to relax or walk around in the village.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Be prepared for a ride worse than soul destroying!! You’re going to crawl up the mighty Changla which at 5,360 meters is no walk/ ride in the park. Expect to crawl up at an average speed of 5Kmph, which means that the ride uphill will take about 6 hours (possibly more).

After the pass, there is a bone jarring downhill on probably one of the worst stretches on this road – rather the worst stretch anywhere in the world! Once this terrible stretch is over, you’ll ride on a spectacularly beautiful road – the road quality is average+ but the scenery is straight out of a fairy tale. Additionally, this road is now all downhill till Tangste village where you will stay for the night.

Meals included: Breakfast, Packed lunch and Dinner

Now that the worst of climbing is over, you’ll ride on another spectacularly beautiful section to the Pangong Tso lake. The last section of today’s ride is uphill but it’s so beautiful that you’ll thank yourself (and us) for the rest of your life!

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

After spending some time at the Pangong Tso, you’ll get into the support vehicles for your drive back to Leh. En route, you’ll get a chance to stop over at the Thikshey Monastery.

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Expedition ends this morning.

It’s time to bid adeiu to Ladakh – or stay on if you plan to explore more of Ladakh.
