Commonly found in open grassland and thin forests, the blue jay is a considered a sign of good luck.
The blue jay is also known as the neelkanth or blue throat after lord Shiva whose throat became blue after drinking poison. Though the bird has a light brownish throat, the name still sticks.

The Indian Roller is quite a common bird of the Indian subcontinent. Being a city slicker, I had only seen glimpses of the bird earlier. This was the first time I ever saw (and photographed) it properly and was obviously quite fascinated with it.
The rural lifestyle (which in a large number of cases is quite harmonious with nature) has accustomed the Rollers to human presence. Which explains how I managed to get so close and take a portrait shot of this guy…
